Hello, I’m Kate. I am a writer, a mother, a wife, and a storyteller. I am a homebody with a penchant for adventure and travel. A queer feminist who believes in justice. I love to find and create magic and beauty wherever I go, and after many years of pain and loss, I am learning to become enchanted with life again. Homecoming is my newsletter about finding and making home—in places, in others, and ourselves.

When I became pregnant with my first and only child at the tender age of twenty-three, slivers of my inner knowing began to awaken. Slowly, I began to reconnect with myself, left my first marriage, and the following year, came out as queer and fell in love with my best friend.

Yet despite the ways my life was becoming more of what I had always desired and wished for, there was still more growing and finding and creating to come. So I spent four years living nomadically, which changed me in fundamental and irrevocable ways, in search of home—and myself.

During the pandemic, I settled down with my wife and teenage daughter in a small house in the Midwest for another four years, did the deep work of healing from a lifetime of trauma, celebrated the publication of my first book, and wrote the first draft of a memoir.

After many years of longing to move west, and healing and growing and becoming, I decided it was time to start the next chapter of my life—one in which I am not a helpless child, nor a heartbroken adult, but a woman transformed. A woman of agency. A woman of raw honesty, pleasure, desire, and hope. A woman of bravery. A woman who writes her own story.

Now, I call Portland, Oregon home—and continue to come home to myself, in thousands of ways, big and small, over and over again.
